In this tut we will be making an avatar that looks something like this:
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk19/Naruto1268/SailorAvi.gif

1. Start by opening a new image with the size that you want,I used 100x100 because thats the size of a normal Avatar

2.Next you open the render you want to use.I will be using this one:
http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm268/JennaJigsawHOE/Sailor%20moon/sailor-moon-1.gif

You can scale and reposition your render till it fits.

3.The Next step is to find a cool texture or backround that you want in the avatar.I used this one:

http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii30/jonas_luver_2008/textures/pinky10.png

Reposition the backround and maybe scale it so it slighly above the render.Such as my example at the top.

4. To get the slight color you see in the avatar. To get that I downloadoed th sinous 8 brushpack. but you might be able to acheave that by duncking the color you want and lowering the opacity

5.Now for the text.Pick your font and make the size really small so thats its basiclly unreadable.Type a bit to get the effect like above

Typing something like this:
font font font
font font font
font font font
font font font
text

Now thats just an example but it would be alot smaller.
The near that make a larger more readable text in the same font and color.

In this case I used Sailor.

6.Now all thats laeft is adding a border most sizes are good.Nothing to big.I wouldnt suggest going over three.

Thats all.Simple right. If you want you can add any filter or anything you want to try.I suggest doing this before the font.So yea.....enjoy!And post your results.

Awesome tutorial. I like the result you got. I'm going to have a go later when I get gimp open. were would i find the textures? If you have a look at my sig there's a link to a gfx resource list. If you go there you'll find a whole heap of sites that have textures.
