Plea Bargaining, as defined by Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of Law: the negotiation of an agreement between the prosecution and the defense whereby the defendant pleads guilty to a lesser offense or to one or some of multiple offenses usually in exchange for more lenient sentencing recommendations, a specific sentence, or dismissal of other charges
Advantages: Keeps court system moving, generally happens on the first trial and is beneficial to both the procecutor and defendant. The Procecutor gets to move onto another case, and the defendant gets a shorter sentance. This is checked by the judge before it is signed.
About 90% of all cases in the US court system are settled by plea bargains.
Disadvantages: Innocent people can plead guilty just to get out of court. Killers, rapists, and other people get shorter sentances, thus enabling them to get out of jail sooner and back on the streets.
90% of all cases are settled by plea bargains, only 10% of all cases excersise their right to a trial and move onto a full trial.
If this gets interesting enough, I might throw my two cases into the mix.
DEBATE, GOGOGO.
