Ah, I've been wanting to teach this to someone for a long time.
1. Watch AMVs. Study them. Find out what makes them good, is it the special effects? Is it the timing? Is it the lyrics matching what's going on?
2. Find out if you have the program. I personally use Windows Movie Maker, but you MUST be extremely patient to use that. It crashes and freezes often and it's often hard to add effects and clips. Other alternatives are Sony Vegas. I haven't used said program, so I can't really critique it.
3. Pick a song. Listen to the lyrics, make the AMV in your head.
4. Find episodes to use. Personally I go to wikipedia for episode lists, but I don't think smaller series would be listed. You can always try though.
5. Find either RAW or Subbed episodes. If you're looking to make a Naruto AMV, NarutoRAWs (http://www.narutoraws.info/index.html) has very good quality RAW episodes. Admittedly, it's a new site, and it doesn't have most of the episodes, but if the episodes you want are listed there, download it.
5a. If you are used subbed episodes, try and avoid having the subs in the AMV. It takes away from it greatly.
6. This part greatly depends on your style. Some people like random action AMVs, others like AMVs that go to the beat, some like it to match to the lyrics. Which ever one you want to do.
7. If you're using WMM, be sure you're on the timeline and zoomed in as far as you can. Make sure you make it so the the music silences the clips sound. Listen to the beats and clip each clip you use accordingly.
8. If using WMM, be sure to save OFTEN. Every ten minutes is NOT ENOUGH. Every time you add/remove something. SAVE.

My Own WMM Tutorial (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/61052260/)
For the heck of it, I made a tutorial. It mentions effects, various tools, and the video clips. Anything not mentioned, I'd suggest learning on your own, AMV making is personal. Everyone has their own style, and you should pick up on that.
