Wrong the smartest shinobi is unknown, there are how many countries and people in their world, we only seen shika's iq and thats it, that cannot be said to be the smartest.

Shikaku has beaten Shikamaru in chess, something noone else has done before. It was something to show that Shikamaru can still improve.

Well the Smartest is by far Shikaku. Muffin already gave the reason why. And as far as sheer brilliance and knowledge goes I would put these in order

1.Shikaku (Shikamaru's dad so I mean come on)
2.Madara (over 100 years old. He has to know something)
3.Sarutobi (The man was Hokage and like 63 years old. He had to have some intelligence also)
4.Jiraiya (Traveled the world and wrote a bunch of books about it and his encounters. yeah)
5.Shikamaru (he is pretty knoweledgeable)

Now as far as smart as in battle wise and not just common knowledge.

3.Shikamaru
4.Jiraiya
5.Between Kakashi and Madara (Madara is over 100 years old and has survived as long as he has. He has to be battlesmart and Kakashi is just really smart in general as far as battle goes aswell.)

^ Hrmm i donno if i would put Itachi so high battle wise. Sure he's got amazing talent and ability but i would put Kakashi higher than him and Shikamaru has shown his abilities quite a few times. Plus Madara is pretty much an older, wiser Itachi.

Itachi is basically a better version of Sasuke also and when Sasuke used that genjutsu against Diedara and made himself look like he was blowing up from the inside out was extremely inteligent. He was able to just look at the attack and tell what type it was and come up with an awesome counter for it. And Itachi is basically that times 2 at least.


Sure he's got amazing talent and ability
Its really his ability I am putting him so high. Haveing the Sharingan is really the only reason I am putting him so high. Because he is able to asses a whole battle on the spot. But if he didnt have the Sharingan I wouldnt have even put him in the top 5.

I wouldnt put Kakashi over Shikamaru at all. I mean Shikamaru useing that little pill thing against Hidan was genious. Shikamaru even though the odds were against him used his intelligence to win. Kakashi is just really good with his abilities. yes he is a genious by far with them but Shikamaru doesnt have any extremely strong abilities like Kakashi's to back himself up. All he has is sheer intelligence.


Plus Madara is pretty much an older, wiser Itachi.
That May be so but we have never actually seen him do anything battle wise that was just out of this world smart. We know he is over 100 years old and has had to fought many battles over his time so he has to know something. Now if he were to fight and show some of that knowledge then I would rank him higher myself but until then he just isnt anywhere smarter than the rest of them.

Oh I definetly give Kakashi his dues in his battle experience. But like I said, Shikamaru has beatin people just out of his league where as Kakashi wins most but not the bigger fights. Shikamru is just as we see a genious in battle tactics. Thats why he is so good at chess. And Kakashi followed Shikamaru's battle plan against Hidan and Kakazu and things worked out perfectly. I just think with Shikamaru's tactical brain and haveing the ability to see that far ahead in a battle and on the chess bored and knowing when he has lost just puts him above Kakashi.

Because Itachi is basically a better Sasuke. And Itachi has shown to be pretty smart in battle. That and I did include Kakashi's Sharingan. But Itachi is just by far better with his than Kakashi. Like I am for no reason saying Shikamru can beat Kakashi, and I damn sure aint saying that Itachi can beat Jiraiya, I just think that that is about the right order for who is smarter at battle.

But for Itachi being more of a stationary fighter and determineing attacks and turning them around with genjutsu (like when Itachi used genjutsu on Diedara for the first time). when Itachi used genjutsu on Diedara he already had everything figured out and made Diedara basically attack himself.
